How Much Does a Prairie Falcon Eat Each Day?

There is no reliable daily quantity that applies to every prairie falcon. Food requirements change with the bird’s size, activity, temperature, breeding status, and the type of prey captured.

A ground squirrel provides much more food than an insect or small songbird. A breeding pair feeding several chicks must also capture more prey than a nonbreeding adult. Prairie falcons may cache part of a large kill and return to it later. For these reasons, a fixed number of prey animals or ounces per day would create misleading precision.
